Founder and Principal

Twenty-one years in the Royal Marines, commissioned from the ranks, followed by thirteen years advising governments and running deployed teams.

1992 – 2013 · Royal Marines

Twenty-one years, commissioned from the ranks. Operational service in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. Completed service as a Major, Officer Commanding the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron.

Specialisms

Operational planning, signals intelligence, counter-insurgency analysis, and force and personnel management. Countering organised crime and gang criminality.

2013 – present · Defence and security advisory

Senior advisory appointments to United Kingdom government, including through the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and to commercial clients. Has conducted a national strategic defence review in southern Africa, advised governments on border security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Togo and Chad, and served as a military adviser in northern Sudan. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo he organised and delivered public order and pre-election security training to more than two thousand police officers. Currently mentors senior officials within a government’s national security decision-making framework.

Programme delivery

Recruits, contracts and manages deployed personnel under host-nation law, with responsibility for contract management and capability delivery.

Joint operational history

With Ferg Luckyn-Malone, mentored senior and junior officers in the security of the Syrian border regions of Lebanon. Both have visited the Turkish border and worked alongside major commercial technology providers on the detection of irregular crossing. Both served as officers on United Kingdom Strategic Defence and Security Reviews during their military careers, which is where the method set out on this site began.

Ferg Luckyn-Malone

Sixteen years in the British Army’s infantry, followed by twelve years advising governments and specialising in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

1998 – 2014 · Royal Highland Fusiliers and The Royal Regiment of Scotland

Sixteen years’ service and a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Operational service in Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. Completed service as a Major, appointed Military Assistant to a United Kingdom Major-General.

Operational planning, intelligence analysis, ISR and training delivery. Counter-terrorism, counter-smuggling, border security and countering organised and gang criminality.

2014 – present · Defence and security advisory

Senior advisory appointments to the United States Department of State and to United Kingdom government departments including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Home Office. Senior maritime ISR adviser in the English Channel, and intelligence adviser to a national police force in the Caribbean on countering organised gang criminality, and assessment, advisory and mentoring work in Jordan and Cameroon. Served on the United Kingdom border crossing team in support of the Home Office, where the interest was in which detection methods actually work rather than which are specified.

Programme delivery

Conducts operational and training needs analysis alongside host-nation government forces, converting findings into a bespoke training programme reinforced by one-to-one mentoring.

Building the team to the requirement

Every engagement is staffed against the requirement, not against what the principals happen to hold. Where a need is identified we fill it with a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner in that discipline, working alongside the principals rather than under them. So where the work touches policing, prosecution, custody or the law, it is a police officer, a prosecutor or a lawyer who does it. Our network covers policing and investigation, prosecution and the judiciary, intelligence and analysis, maritime and littoral operations, and training design. Associates are selected against the requirement, vetted to a standard acceptable to the client, and named to the client before deployment. We do not substitute personnel without written agreement.
